Jacobs School of Music Spring 2017 Student Award Winners

The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music has been notified by its faculty of the following students who have won awards, honors, placement, or recognition over the course of the spring semester. We are proud of our students and their many achievements. Congratulations to all!

The faculty of the Department of Musicology have awarded the Caswell Family Scholarship to Matthew Leone, the Hans and Alice B. Tischler Award to Carolyn Carrier-McClimon, the Freda and Walter Kaufmann Prize in Musicology to Daniel Rogers, and the IU Jacobs School of Music Dissertation Year Fellowship to David Rugger. All are doctoral candidates.

The Jacobs School of Music’s Austin B. Caswell Award, which honors the best undergraduate music history class papers written during the previous calendar year, was awarded to Vanessa Gehring, vocal performance, and Brian Curl, bassoon performance.

The Organ Department’s Hansol Kim, who is pursuing a performer’s diploma, was the first-place winner in the Fox Valley (Chicago) American Guild of Organists Competition. Undergrad Collin Miller took first prize in the Tulsa Regional Competition for Young Organists sponsored by the American Guild of Organists, and undergrad Leah Martin captured first place in the guild’s Indianapolis Regional Competition for Young Organists.

Nikola Begovic, a graduate student in the Guitar Department, was awarded first prize at the Matinee Musicale Indianapolis in February, and Stephen Brew, a doctoral candidate, took third place in the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society Competition in March.

Graduate students Qi Li and Felipe Tovar-Henao in the Composition Department, received honorable mentions at the 2017 ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Awards, as did graduates Yihan Chen and Ryan Chase.

Christian Purdy, who graduated in May with a Bachelor of Music Education, was named a recipient of the 2017 Kate Hevner Mueller Outstanding Senior Award, an IU Bloomington senior recognition award.

Pianist Elizabeth Yao took second place in senior piano in the Lima Symphony Orchestra’s 57th annual Young Artists Competition for college musicians on April 27 in Lima, OH. The competition featured piano, woodwind and brass performers. She is a doctoral candidate.

Alexander Horton, a graduate student in the Strings Department, captured the principal bass chair of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra in national auditions on April 30. The Jacobs School Graduate Quartet-in-Residence, the Vera Quartet – Pedro Rodríguez, Patricia Quintero García, Inés Picado Molares, and Justin Goldsmith, received several awards including Grand Prize at the Plowman Chamber Music Competition, First Prize at the Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition, and Second Place in the Senior Strings division of the M|prize Chamber Arts Competition. They were also recently featured as Young Artists in Residence on American Public Media’s Performance Today.

Graduate Monica Dewey, a soprano, won the 10th International Hilde Zadek Voice Competition, which comes with a 10,000 € grand prize. Tenor Richard Smagur won the 2016-17 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions on Sunday, March 19. Kellie Motter is the Georgina Joshi Fellowship winner for the 2017-18 academic year; the 2016-17 winner was Mathilda Edge.
