Alumna Jennifer Berg appointed English Horn with the San Antonio Symphony

Congratulations ton Jennifer Berg (BM 09), who was recently appointed as English Horn with the San Antonio Symphony.

A San Antonio native, Jennifer received her Bachelor’s in 2009 from Indiana University, graduating with Distinction and with Honors in music.  While at Indiana, she was principal of the local Camerata orchestra, playing alongside School of Music faculty, and she had the opportunity to solo with the school’s chamber orchestra.  Her primary instructor was Linda Strommen, though Roger Roe assisted in her English horn education.  Jennifer then pursued her Master’s and a Graduate Diploma at the New England Conservatory in Boston under the tutelage of John Ferrillo, where she was awarded the school’s Gillet Scholarship and soloed with its prestigious Bach Ensemble.

Additionally, Jennifer held positions in Boston as English horn with the Boston Philharmonic, was a soloist and orchestra member of the Boston Latin-American Orchestra, and she was principal of Discovery Ensemble, a highly reputable chamber orchestra whose mission was to educate children in underprivileged schools about classical music. Outside of Indiana and Boston, Jennifer was named principal oboe for two consecutive years (2007-2008) with the New York String Orchestra Seminar in Carnegie Hall under the direction of Jaime Laredo and was a member of the National Repertory Orchestra in 2011. She has also attended the Aspen and Brevard Music Festivals.  In addition to her position as English horn with the San Antonio Symphony, Jennifer is currently the principal oboist of the Mid-Texas Symphony and hopes to train the next generation of young professionals like her former teacher and new colleague, Mark Ackerman.

In her free time, Jennifer is an avid swing dancer and CrossFit athlete.
