IU’s Latin American Music Center invited to New York festival

Composers Now, a New York City festival, has welcomed Indiana University’s Latin American Music Center to present “American Cosmology,” a program of two chamber works this weekend. Composer Tania Leon extended the invitation, having heard concerts in Bloomington during celebrations of the LAMC’s 50th anniversary in October.

The program consists of David Dzubay’s “Astral” String Quartet and Garbriela Ortiz’s “Baalkah” for String Quartet and Soprano.

It was designed by Carmen Helena Tellez, who directs the center, to feature meditations on the sky and the cosmos that complement each other in the two compositions.

The first performance was Saturday at the Music Now Marathon in Symphony Space. The second will be Monday at the Americas Society Concert Series.

Participating are young artists from the Jacobs School of Music: soprano Sharon Harms, violinists Madalyn Parnas and Timothy Kantor, violist Rose Wollman, and cellist Cicely Parnas.
