Associate Professor Luke Gillespie has been busy these past few months!
He was invited to be a guest solo artist in Indonesia in early May, visiting two music schools: The Conservatory of Music at the Universitas Pelita Harapan in Karawaci (next to Jakarta) and the Melodiya Music School in Surabaya. He gave classical and jazz piano masterclasses, seminars on the history of solo jazz piano and the intersection of jazz and classical piano styles, and performed solo concerts. The first half of each concert was classical repertoire and the second half was jazz, ending with improvisations on a dozen Chopin themes.
2012 has been very activer so far for Luke starting with a performance at the international Jazz Education Network conference in Louisville, KY, with his trio featuring colleague Jeremy Allen on bass and Jason Tiemann on drums. He also performed the music of David Baker with the Buselli-Wallarab Jazz Orchestra.
In February, Gillespie was joined by three guest jazz pianists (Steve Allee, Harry Pickens and Phil DeGreg) to perform a 40 FINGERS concert in Auer Hall (with colleagues Jeremy Allen on bass and Steve Houghton on drums).
Gillespie performed with the Jamey Aebersold Quartet at the University of Indianapolis and the Murray State University Jazz Festival, featuring Jamey Aebersold on alto saxophone, Tyrone Wheeler on bass and Jonathan Higgins on drums.
