Please note the April 15 performance of Frederick Fox’s Night Ceremonies. Frederick Fox was long a member of the IU composition department, serving as chair for many years and founding the New Music Ensemble in 1974. Professor Fox passed away August 24, 2011.

NEWS: CURRENT STUDENTS

Steven Snethkamp and Matthew Peterson were recently honored as the winners of the “National” category for the Third Angle “New Ideas in Music Competition.” Mathew was the winner of the National catergory with his work for solo violin Nacken and Steven was the runner up of the National category with his piece titled Disembodied.

Benjamin Taylor

Benjamin Taylor was selected as a travel grant award winner by the GPSO. They have awarded him $500 to help towards travel expenses so that he can attend the Gamma-UT New Music Conference in Austin, Texas in April. Ben has also received a Meet  the Composer grant to attend the performances of Shipbreaking in NYC and Boston.

Ben will be participating in preconcert discussions detailing his compositional technique and use of live electronics. In addition, he and Mr. Herchen will provide a hands-on demonstration of the max patch and allow audience members to audition the live effects. These activities are funded in part by a grant from New Music USA (formerly Meet the Composer).

Also, on March 5th, the Cleveland Chamber Symphony under the direction of Steven Smith performed a chamber orchestra version of Ben’s composition Panic Later.

Jess Turner has had the following recent performances and workshops: North Texas Wind Symphony under direction of Eugene Corporon performed his Rumpelstilzchen for large wind ensemble; while guest composer at the University of Georgia’s NeXt contemporary music festival, the UGA wind ensemble performed his Through the Looking Glass to open their concert; his Chamber Concerto No. 1 for solo sop. sax and wind octet was premiered by the Hudson Valley Chamber Winds with Joey Abad, sax at the CDBNA Northeast regional conference at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, PA; and Rumpelstilzchen was performed by the Ithaca College Wind Ensemble under the direction of Steve Peterson.

Eric Lindsay

Eric Lindsay’s Coronary Dance of the Destructive Sense has been selected winner of the 2012 Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble Composition Competition. The Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble will perform his piece on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at Bloomington High School North.

Clint Needham has been appointed Composer-in-Residence at Baldwin-Wallace College (Berea, OH).

Natalie Williams

Natalie Williams (DM 2011) has recently accepted a large orchestral commission from the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. It is a new work based on the life of Sir Donald Bradman (a prominent Australian icon) and will be premiered in 2014. The duration is 30 minutes and forces include the orchestra, choir and vocal soloists. Natalie will have full artistic control over the new work, including text, orchestra size, even the possibility of writing a theatre or dance piece or using a pit/stage/chamber orchestra. The work will be premiered in her home town of Adelaide in 2014.
